In the fall of 2008, Andy McDermott was enrolled in the Mentorship program at Athlete's Performance in Tempe, Arizona when he met TRX Professor Chris Frankel and was introduced to the TRX Suspension Trainer. Fast forward three years later and Andy has an ever-expanding fan base of his TRX exercise videos on Youtube where his creativity brings a welcome dose of fun and levity to the mix. And the results speak for themselves.
“I love to use the TRX as an alternative to going to the gym,” says Andy. “For instance, right now I am in a phase of training where one day is an upper or lower body heavy day, and then a few days later will be an upper or lower body, repetitions day, with a different emphasis horizontally/vertically. I love to use the TRX on the reps day and set it up outside someplace.” Of course, when you live in Arizona, it would seem a waste to not take advantage of all that sunshine and take your workout outside.
Check out the video above for one of Andy's favorite outdoor circuits. To start, partner A runs for 400 yards while partner B performs three sets of the following exercises (10 reps each): TRX Y Deltoid Y Fly, TRX Biceps Curl and TRX Triceps Press. Then, both partners switch (B runs while A gets on the TRX) and after that, the fun part: one partner grabs a football and runs 10 passes, and then they switch quarterbacks. Repeat for five rounds.
As Andy suggests in the video, you can switch up the exercises and incorporate other equipment into the circuit. It all depends on the goal for your workout.
For Andy, his fitness goals are simple: to always be in the very best overall shape he can be in. "I know I will never be the biggest, strongest or fastest, but I train hard so that I know I am faster than the big strong guys and stronger than the fast guys." This circuit helps Andy achieve both of his goals of increased strength and speed as well as a third less quantifiable goal: a little serenity.
"The TRX keeps me sane, because if I have to go to the gym EVERY day, I start to feel like a hamster on a wheel. I love that I can get a great workout outside in a short amount of time, so I can get my day going right."
