While the U.S. women's soccer team came up short in their recent quest for gold, their incredible athleticism was on show for the world to see. We caught up with three of the team’s players, Heather O’Reilly, Heather Mitts and Lauren Cheney, to find out how they continue to maintain their competitive edge, as they turn their focus on the 2012 Olympics in London next July.
“Being part of two Olympic Games and one World Cup so far, I have more experience than the other girls,” says midfielder Heather O’Reilly. “Sometimes I’m not the most skilled player, but I've tried to become more sophisticated on the ball.” Heather turns to TRX Suspension Training to help sharpen her skills and continue building on existing levels of strength, balance, flexibility and core stability, all crucial for on-field success.
For other players, the TRX doesn’t just help them to elevate their game; it helps them to stay in the game. “Making it to the World Cup meant a lot of hard work, not only over the past couple of years but also recently with my injury,” says defender Heather Mitts. “The TRX is awesome, especially when you’re coming back from an injury; I like the fact that its bodyweight, and I can use it for injury prevention.”
Injury prevention and durability as an athlete are paramount, especially when you're constantly performing at such a high level. Suspension Training allows athletes to train for mobility, joint stability and strengthening in multiple planes of motion, while providing a whole body, functional training solution.
“Sometimes in other sports, it’s all about lifting weights and strength,” says forward Lauren Cheney. “But with soccer, it’s so much about how you carry your bodyweight and change directions, how powerful you are alone. That’s what so cool about the TRX; everything is bodyweight. Your core is so important in soccer. If you don’t have a good core with TRX, you’re not going to be able to do a lot of the movements.”
In addition to the soccer specific application of Suspension Training, the trio is unanimous in their appreciation for the portability and versatility of the TRX. “The ease of traveling with the TRX is very helpful to us as professional athletes,” says Heather O. “The fact that you can take it with you anywhere, and you can do so many different exercises on it, is really helpful.”
No matter what sport you play and no matter the goal, the TRX Suspension Trainer continues to help athletes around the world finish on top.
